With the Coastal Mountain range as a backdrop and the mighty Fraser River to the south, our district is centered in the heart of the Lower Mainland. We are the third largest district in BC, serving the cities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody, and the villages of Belcarra and Anmore.
Our district strives for student success by offering a wide range of programs and services, including:
We support students from Strong Start to Continuing Education Adult Programmes. Students are at the core of all our decisions. We want to provide the best opportunities for their future success.
We believe in “Increasing Success in Life for All.”
Our district practises a collaborative approach, and our teachers, support staff, vice-principals, principals and excluded staff all make a difference in the lives of students. Our Board of Education’s role is to advocate and provide support for its employees in their work: improving student learning and life chances for every student. We are committed to continuous growth and improvement for our students and our employees.
The Four Why’s to Join SD43 (Coquitlam)
In 35 minutes, you can be in downtown Vancouver OR you can be sailing, canoeing, kayaking, or hiking… and it’s more affordable than other parts of the Lower Mainland with easy access to the Skytrain and bus routes.
What is the key for us is our relationships with our fabulous partner groups – the Coquitlam Teacher’s Association (CTA); the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE); the District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC); and the Student Leadership Council (SLC). All of our partner groups have an important voice, with sometimes differing opinions, but we communicate and collaborate effectively to move ahead on initiatives for student learning.
Most employee typically receive a comprehensive benefits package including:
Mentorship:
We believe in providing personalized learning opportunities to our employees. For teachers, this includes mentorship support. Eight full-time Mentorship teachers provide 1-to-1 support or networking sessions to assist with:
These teachers are also specialized in primary, intermediate, middle, secondary, student services, music, technology and library. Workshops include report card writing, 101s interview tips and tricks and TTOC tips and tricks.
Technology:
SD43 is a recognized leader in the provisioning and use of technology in the classroom. SD43 recognizes the important role of technology in supporting high-quality instruction while helping teachers to be productive in their work. As a result, every teacher is equipped with a modern, high-powered 2-in-1 touch screen laptop and ensures those devices are refreshed regularly.
Students in middle and secondary schools utilize one-to-one laptops to support instruction, while the district ensures elementary schools are well equipped with iPads for primary classrooms and 2-in-1 touch laptops at intermediate.
Beyond providing excellent access to the latest technology, SD43 understands that supporting the use of these tools is critical to both teacher confidence and success in the classroom. As a result, SD43 has a dedicated Technology Support Team that work directly with teachers in their classrooms every day. These support teachers help classroom teachers use the technology confidently and efficiently with an emphasis on leading pedagogical practices. This work is further supported by an active network of technology lead teachers at every school. SD43 teachers are never expected to learn on their own as support is always a priority so that teachers can focus on what matters most – their students!
